How Did James Dutton Die In 1883

In 1923, the fates of james and margaret dutton are revealed through narration by elsa dutton, their deceased daughter from 1883, but fans of yellowstone already knew. During a hunt for horse thieves, james was fatally shot and died just as he made it back to the homestead. In early 1894, margaret died from hypothermia and leaves her two children to fend for themselves. At the end of 1883, elsa dies in jamess arms due to the untreated and worsening arrow wound. Before dying, she chooses a spot in paradise valley to be buried.
